Portrait trials

These are painting trials from my Identity project. In this project I had to explore different painting techniques using different painting mediums. We also had to learn how to paint portraits and create skin tones.

In the trials above I have experimented using oil paints and digital painting.

In the first trial I have used oil paints and a dry brush technique. As this was only me experimenting I painted half of a portrait of my friend. I built up his skin tone by layering oranges, yellows and browns. Using the dry brush techniques made it easier to create highlighted areas, as I was able to leave paper shining through. To build up the shadows I layered up more paint to let less paper shine through. The advantage of using oil paint was that it didnt dry quickly meaning it was easier to blend colours together.

In my second trial I also used oil paints. I experimented using the scraffito technique and working with light skin tones on a section of my own face. First I painted the piece like I normaly would but using thicker layer of paint. I used creams, yellows, pinks and white to create the lighter skin tone. Once I had finish painting I used the wooden end of my paint brush to scratch and add marks into the paint. I made the lines follow the direction of the face to create a flow.

My final trail was done using paint on photoshop. I uploaded a photo of myself and erased everthing except my clothing. Then using the black paint brush tool I painted the outlines of my face, hair and hands. I didnt add any colour and kept it as a basic outline because I felt enough detail came from the suit.

ARTHUR PORTRAIT

This is a piece from my Identity project. It is a watercolour portrait I did of my friend Arthur.

I chose to paint my friend because I wanted to include people that have a meaning to me and make me happy. I chose Arthur in particular because he is my best friend and has always been there for me.

When I did a photo shoot of my friend I asked him to be himself and wear what he would usually wear. When taking the photo i asked him to pull a happy expression so I could show happiness through my painting later on.

This piece is done in watercolours as it is my most confident painting media. I chose to work in a realistic style because I wanted a realistic piece i could show the expression through the painting.

 self

Portrait

This is another piece from my Identity project. It is a watercolour portrait of myself.

I chose to include myself in this series of watercolour painting because the idea was based on myself and the people that made me happy and felt it was fitting to include myself.

The photo I used was a selfie I took after having my hair dyed and being very pleased with it. I felt this photo was appropriate because it showed a happy expression in the moment.

This piece is also done in watercolours and in a realistic style because I wanted to keep the look and style consistent and they are what I am most confident working in.

Taylor portrait

This piece is from my Identity project. It is watercolour portrait of my friend Taylor.

The theme of these watercolour portraits was who makes me happy and that is my friends. I chose to paint Taylor in paticular because she means a lot to me and is someone I care about a lot. Whenever I see her she never fails to make me laugh.

When taking photos of her I asked her to wear the clothing she would usually wear and to be herself. When taking the photo I told her to make a big happy expression.

This piece is also done in watercolours as it fits in with the rest of the paintings. The realistic style I have tried to use has helped show off her expression and create a happy vibe.
